Pennsylvania
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, often referred to as PA, is a state located in the Northeastern and Middle Atlantic regions of the United States. Pennsylvania is bordered by the states of New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and Ohio. Pennsylvania has been known as the Keystone State since 1802, based in part upon its central location among the original Thirteen Colonies.
Pennsylvania Regions
Pennsylvania is divided into seven regions. In each region, the State of Independence delivers adventure, scenic beauty, history, cultural riches and the friendliest people you’ll meet anywhere in the world.

Great Lakes Region
The Great Lakes Region is a natural haven for people who love the outdoors. Hikers and bikers enjoy exploring the forests that stretch for miles. There are the sparkling waters of Lake Erie and the treasures of Presque Isle State Park, a National Landmark with seven miles of sandy surf beaches. Boaters and sailors flock to the lake, and bird-watchers can spend days at the Erie National Wildlife Refuge. Charming Victorian towns, lakeside wineries, maritime museums, monuments and lighthouses make this region a getaway destination.
Pittsburgh and Its Countryside
The Pittsburgh and Its Countryside region has bright lights and big-city feel along with quiet beauty of a surrounding countryside. From exciting nightlife to wooded hiking and biking trails, this region is an inviting, friendly place to explore and relax. Take in a touring Broadway show or live music performance, gallery-hop amid eclectic restaurants or get off the beaten path and explore one of Pittsburgh's many ethnic neighborhoods. Spas, amusement parks, historic sites, wineries and more make this region an ideal getaway spot.
Pennsylvania Wilds
The Pennsylvania Wilds region has outdoor thrills, incredible mountain scenery and charming villages. The beauty and relaxed way of life in this region make visitors feel at home. You can wish upon a star in Cherry Springs State Park, Pennsylvania's first dark sky preserve, hike or bike the Pine Creek Gorge, Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon, camp in the many state and local parks and even do some whitewater rafting. Don't forget your fishing tackle and hunting gear and keep an eye out for wildlife species that are native to this region.
The Alleghenies and Her Valleys
The Alleghenies and Her Valleys region is classic Americana with small towns, covered bridges, tree-sheltered streams, state parks and forests that offer unmatched beauty and tranquility. The antiquing is serious in this region and the county fair is the highlight of the summer. Biking, hiking and wildlife watching are some of the favorite ways to pass the time. There’s no air pollution, road rage, traffic jams or tourist traps. So come and search for covered bridges on a leisurely country drive and stop by the roadside for a photo or two. You’ll discover a place where the hustle and bustle of everyday life fades away and a more relaxed pace sets the tone.
Dutch Country Roads
The Dutch Country Roads region is home to Harrisburg, the state capital of Pennsylvania, and Hershey, the chocolate capital of the world. Amish farmers toil next to world-class amusement parks and shoppers snap up bargains in world-famous designer factory outlets. Cultural attractions vie for attention with farmers' markets and quaint villages line the country roads between thriving small cities. From railroads to coal mine tours, America's oldest brewery to galleries and battlegrounds to live theatre, the Dutch Country Roads region has more than enough sights and activities to keep you busy.
Northeast Pennsylvania Mountains
The Northeast Pennsylvania Mountains region has a reputation for being the ultimate getaway spot. For skiers and snowboarders, it's a white powder heaven. For outdoor enthusiasts, it's all about the mountain trails and state parks which are ideal for hiking, biking and water activities. For NASCAR fans, it's the breathless exhilaration of the Pocono Raceway. Travelers will find comfortable accommodations in bed and breakfasts and luxurious resorts for either a romantic retreat or to catch up on a little rest and relaxation.
Philadelphia and the Countryside
The Philadelphia and the Countryside region is where our founding fathers dared to dream of forming a self-governing nation. From the meeting rooms of Independence Hall to the surrounding countryside, early Philadelphians set our course for freedom. The memory of their struggles and sacrifices endures at places like Brandywine Battlefield and Valley Forge. Today, Philadelphia is a thriving metropolis with exciting restaurants, world-class theatres and museums of art and history. The winding roads of the countryside roll past wineries, friendly towns and cozy inns where you can relax and engage in the pursuit of happiness while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
